This course is ideal for those who want to know more about refugees in general, as well as those who might go on to volunteer and work with people seeking sanctuary.
This course focuses on refugees and the migration of people in the last 20 years or so. It does not provide a comprehensive history of the movement of people prior to the year 2000.

Authors

Liz Hibberd is the Strategic and Partnership Lead at Manchester City of Sanctuary.
She has worked at MCoS since 2018 and passionately believes in the power of connection, compassion and empathy. These are the key values that underpin the work she does, and are vital for promoting understanding and awareness and to recognise our shared humanity.
Liz has worked in refugee camps in Greece and France, and spent 6 months volunteering in Ethiopia with internally displaced people.

Mahboobeh Rajabi is a refugee artist from Iran. She is a Digital Artist, Filmmaker, Animator,Theatre Maker, Creative Writer based in Manchester. In the past decade, Mahboobeh has used her art to give a platform to untold stories, mostly focusing on Human Rights, Women’s Rights, refugee and asylum seekers in the UK and internationally.
Mahboobeh’s work has taken her across the North West, working with different organisations and universities such as Cultural Institution and the University of Manchester. Also internationally such as the European Cultural Foundation, WHO and Japan Society North West.
Mahboobeh is working towards identifying system gaps to support asylum seekers and refugees to engage and feel involved within the community and wider parts of the society. Mahboobeh believes in global knowledge, skills, talents and experiences people are bringing into the UK and how we can support their potential to thrive in the society that would also benefit the country and our city Manchester.

Caroline Collier is an English as a Foreign Language Tutor and Course Coordinator in the Language Centre at Manchester Mer University. She has a vast amount of experience teaching English to those in the refugee community, and training future EFL/ESL teachers in order to the equip them with the skills needed for this profession.
